A series of unexplained happenings occur across the eastern United States, caused by objects moving with such great speed that they are nearly invisible. The first-person narrator John Strock, 'Head inspector in the federal police department' in Washington, DC, travels to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to investigate and discovers that all the phenomena are being caused by Robur, a brilliant inventor who had previously appeared in Verne's Robur the Conqueror.


  • Outdated and Unsurprising

    After reading this book's prequel, which I didn't enjoy, I felt obliged to read this one in hopes of an agreeable conclusion to so dull a story. Unfortunately, I was disappointed again. While I did enjoy this story slightly more than "Robur the Conqueror," it was still either uninspired or its effect has been diminished by the passage of years and the technological augmentations made therein. The narrator asks so many questions of the reader and makes so many obvious suppositions so late in the story that it's corny and predictable. The reader is always ten steps ahead of the main character, and this is unacceptable if a book is to surprise and entertain. I literally had to drag myself across the pages of "The Master of the World," and can't say I'd recommend it to anybody.
